The story
Visakhapatnam Steel Plant came out of a public movement in the 1960s demanding a steel plant for Andhra. Built by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), it is India's first shore-based integrated steel plant, using the port to import coking coal. A large ancillary base of fabrication, engineering and service firms grew around it. The plant has faced financial stress and received a central revival package.
In numbers
RINL's Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is the country's first shore-based integrated steel plant, with a current installed capacity of 7.3 Mtpa of liquid steel.
