The story
Faridabad was planned after 1947 as a township for refugees from the North-West Frontier, with small industries to give them work. Its place on the Delhi–Mathura road brought large firms such as Escorts, and hundreds of ancillary units grew around them. The district became one of Haryana's biggest industrial bases, making tractors, auto parts, motors and earth-moving machines. Poor internal roads, drainage and power supply are long-standing complaints.
In numbers
Faridabad had 17,186 registered industrial units, including 180 registered medium and large units; major exportable items were auto parts, shoes and tractors.
