The story
Mandarin oranges were planted in the Nagpur region in the 1800s, and the black soil, hot summer and cool winter of Vidarbha give the fruit its sweet-sour taste and loose peel. Orchards spread across Nagpur, Amravati and Wardha districts, and Nagpur became known as the 'Orange City'. The ICAR Central Citrus Research Institute is located in Nagpur. Nagpur orange got a GI tag in 2014.
