The story
Solapur became a textile town in the late 1800s when cotton mills were set up near the cotton belt and the railway. Padmashali weavers who came from Andhra Pradesh brought the skill of weaving chaddars, and after the big mills closed, thousands of small powerloom units took over. Terry towels were added later and are now exported. Both the Solapur chaddar and the Solapur terry towel were among India's first GI registrations in 2005.
