What it is

Primary aluminium from smelters, sold as ingots, sows, billets and EC-grade wire rod. Melted for castings, extrusions, conductors and utensils.

Rules before you buy or sell

• The Ministry of Mines withdrew the Quality Control Orders for aluminium, copper, primary lead, refined zinc and refined nickel on 13 November 2025, so the BIS mark is no longer compulsory for aluminium ingots (IS 2590, IS 4026, IS 617, IS 11890). The government can re-notify a QCO, so check the e-Gazette before you buy or import.
• The withdrawal order is S.O. 5173(E) of 13 November 2025, rescinding S.O. 3846(E) of 31 August 2023.
• Check the current import and export policy for your exact 8-digit HS code in the DGFT ITC(HS) schedules.

Storage and handling

Stack ingot bundles on dry floor; damp ingots can cause steam explosions in the furnace, so preheat before charging.
